Nguyen Van Tuyen is an artist from North Vietnam, practicing the Impressionist style of painting, so popular in the country after French colonisation. However, this artist does not use the thick daubs of gouache paint on canvas, rather he conveys the impression of the subject through a water-colour like transparency of paint application. Nguyen looks to the native people and occupations of his country for inspiration. This work is a meditative one, exuding stillness, of the Vietnamese women, the water and the fish. It is an acrylic on canvas with the wash-finish of watercolours.
