Re-created from the painting ‘Janadanandini’ by Maqbool Fida Husain. I have tried to develop a surreal atmosphere by creating a play with time and space in my painting. In the Foreground I have painted Janadanandini on a Horse Cart wearing designer Sari and Blouse with extended sleeve just the way she used to craft. She carries ‘Bamabodhini Potrika’ (a newspaper where her writings used to be published). I have attempted to copy her portrait photograph with the intention of particularising her. And in the extreme right side of my pictorial space stands Husain himself folding his hands and holding a brush. The background depicts 19th century’s Kolkata (which was then Calcutta). A canvas is painted in the midground where real space of Kolkata is painted. This Canvas covers up most of the background of my pictorial space. Here Husain is painting his Janadanandini in front of The Victoria Memorial. Today’s Victoria Memorial is depicted and a few modern vehicles are shown on the road along with Husain and his work which I am re-creating. Thus, I am trying to create a fusion by combining several phases of Kolkata in a single pictorial space which produces a mysterious play with time and space in my own realistic visual language.
