Folklore has this fascinating episode of Lord Krishna, where he is wrongly accused of eating dirt. His mother, Yashoda, after chastising him, orders him to open his mouth. Krishna does as he is told and Yashoda sees in his mouth, the whole, complete, entire, timeless Universe; all the stars and planets of space and the distance between them; all the lands and seas of the earth and the life on them; in there she sees all the days of yesterday and the days of tomorrow; she sees all ideas and all emotions, all pity and all hope, and the three strands of matter, not a speck of dust, pebble, candle, creature, species, village or galaxy is missing, including herself and every bit of dirt, is in its truthful place. So here it is…. Very textural, this series has the promise of it having been made in clay. And unless you actually touch it, hides its secret of material. I like my canvases to be interactive. With pleasing touch labels all over the display space! My choice of medium here is acrylic paint; heavily grogged acrylics blended with various ceramic ingredients like sand, clay, curdled paints and broken rules, giving the surfaces a very clay-ey look. This series of paintings try to capture the idea of timelessness and infinitude, in the same way as Yashoda saw eternity in that highly gestural nano-second.
